AGT Introduces FATHOM -
An Exclusive IP Video Network Analysis Tool
FATHOM to provide AGT's Managed Services Division with
ability to evaluate future video network performance for its
customers
Rockledge, FL February 27, 2004 - Applied Global
Technologies, an innovative technologies company offering
reliable and worry-free managed services for IP audio, data
and video communications, announces the release of its
new network analysis tool - FATHOM. This tool allows
AGT to thoroughly evaluate individual network's capacity and
capability to support H.323 video and audio traffic at the
desired quality and quantity.
This network services tool may be used to:
*Pre-engineer a network: Allows one
to determine the best approach prior to rolling out H.323
video within a network so that organizational goals are realized.
*Troubleshoot current networks: In
cases where users are reporting problems, this tool provides
the data necessary to isolate the exact cause and determine
potential solutions.
*Prevent potential problems: By systematically
monitoring network QoS under actual conditions, this tool
will help to anticipate and prevent end user problems as network
usage patterns evolve.
The standard utilization of the tool requires deployment of
multiple FATHOM™ test endpoints onto the customer network.
There is no interruption of service during the testing period.
"FATHOM's ability to generate, test and monitor H.323
specific traffic in an operational network setting provides
companies considering upgrading to Video over IP a powerful
tool to analyze and prepare their converged network,"
stated Ben Atha, Chief Technical Officer, Applied Global Technologies.
"Knowing network parameters prior to video infrastructure
changes, eliminates the costly mistakes and ensures that the
end-users first Video over IP conference is successful, a
key ingredient to technology acceptance."
Providing further detail on its actual operation, FATHOM™
creates test video calls between pairs of FATHOM™ endpoints.
During each test call, the FATHOM™ endpoints collect
statistics on the packet loss, end-to-end network delay and
jitter along the path of the call. Multiple calls are
placed between different combinations of endpoints and at
various times of the day, to create a clear picture of the
manner in which the network operates under actual H.323 loading
conditions. The evaluation of actual conditions is unique
to the FATHOM™ tool. In addition,
parameters, such as the video bandwidth and IP TOS flags,
may be set at will for each test call. And because FATHOM
works within mesh networks by design, it is the only tool
that optimizes point-to-point calls as well as MCU calls.
All data is collected from the testing period and a final
report is delivered to the customer. The report, combined
with analysis by AGT engineers, allows the customer opportunity
to maximize its communication objectives and minimize potential
end user problems.
"AGT's development of the FATHOM tool was driven by the
need for flexibility in selecting the combinations of video
codec, bit rate, and traffic prioritization in order to accurately
predict the results of a given customer's desired use of video
over IP," stated Mark Bearden, Ph.D. "No
other H.323 testing tool on the market gives AGT the option
of automated testing using full bit rate video test streams."
Bearden is Applied Global Technologies' Lead Engineer on the
FATHOM development. He was closely involved in
the recent utilization of FATHOM with a federal customer.
